If you're in need of a rabbit, exotic or avian vet here in Dunedin, we’re happy to see all types of pets for physical exams, nail trims, and other wellness services. Exotic pets come in many shapes, sizes, and species, but they all share a need for yearly checkups to stay as healthy as possible. What a Standard Exotic Pet Care Exam Involves
The exam is a straightforward physical in which we check your pet from head to tail for anything unusual. Noticeable signs that warn of a health problem include:
- Weight loss
- Lethargy
- Loss of fur or feathers
- Difficulty breathing/breathing through the mouth
- Sneezing or coughing
- An irregular heartbeat
- Not eating and/or drinking
- Discharge from the nose and eyes
We Offer Diagnostics, Too
Illness is not always apparent in exotic pets unless we do blood work and/or fecal testing for a closer look. Testing can alert us to all manner of diseases, parasites, injuries, and more.
Husbandry and Client Education
Husbandry refers to managing your exotic pet’s day-to-day needs—their diet, habitat, breeding, and health care. At Paws and Claws, we enjoy sitting down with our clients and teaching them about the fundamentals of exotic pet care and husbandry. The more knowledgeable you are about your pet, the better equipped you are to keep them healthy.
It’s also important to remember that no matter how small or “tough” your pet seems, they are still an individual. What might work for another person’s bearded dragon may not work for yours. That’s why we encourage you to come to us with all of your exotic pet concerns.
What People Say About Us
"Dr. Culpepper has helped me keep my pets exceptionally healthy. When I had an after hours emergency with one of my sugar gliders (an exotic pet), Paws and Claws was able to get me in touch with Dr. Culpepper. Jasper was on his way to recovery in no time. She always answers my questions (whether its dogs, birds, sugar gliders or rabbits) and makes me feel like she cares as much for my pets as I care for them."
